A Tradition of Honoring Artists at the Annual Juried Art Show at Phillips’ Mill

Every year, Phillips’ Mill recognizes some of the finest work by area artists with special awards during its Annual Juried Art Show opening reception. This year’s exhibition, the 95th Juried Art Show, which will be held at the historic Mill and online September 21 to October 27, will feature a variety of awards.

Award winners are selected by the show's distinguished panel of jurors and sponsored by supporters of the prestigious show and its artists. Last year, 20 awards totaling $12,000 were presented at the opening preview reception for patrons and artists.

Three annual Patrons' Awards of $1,000 are presented each year, one for painting, one for drawing, pastel or printmaking, and a third for sculpture. Additional awards sponsored by individual patrons focus on subjects like the Award for an Interior Scene sponsored by Diane and Jim Resek, and the African American Art Award, sponsored by Mary and Herbert Flamer. Others focus on style or medium like the Crystal Springs Farm Award for a work in the style of the Pennsylvania Impressionists sponsored by Kathy and Ted Fernberger.

Anyone interested in establishing an award and contributing to an artist’s sense of accomplishment at this year’s 95th Juried Art Show is welcome. For more information, contact Dennis Riley, Art Show Chair, by August 25 at artshow@phillipsmill.org.

Artist Spotlight

Janine Dunn Wade Named the Honored Artist of the 95th Annual Juried Art Show

For Janine Dunn Wade, being named the Honored Artist of the 95th Annual Juried Art Show at Phillips’ Mill is a “dream come true.” Despite an extensive list of achievements, being recognized by Phillips’ Mill as this year’s Honored Artist is one of the most meaningful to the Bucks County fine artist. “I am going to be a part of history,” she says.

Janine still recalls the first time she entered the exhibition. It was 1994, and she had just moved to Bucks County from New York with her husband and young children. She read about the show’s reputation and the rich history of Phillips’ Mill as the birthplace of Pennsylvania Impressionism. “I just had to try to get in,” she recalls. “I can still remember walking down River Road in the pouring rain to the opening reception the first time I entered the show. I was immediately drawn in. It’s a feeling I can’t forget.”

She was met by members of the Art Committee, who were welcoming and warm, and invited her to join the Phillips’ Mill Community Association. She didn’t hesitate for a minute and went on to chair the Art Committee in 2010. She has submitted and been accepted to the Juried Art Show at least 30 times, including winning the Patrons’ Award for painting in 2014.

In Case You Missed It

A Rousing Success!

The 95th Birthday Bash at the Mill last Saturday evening was a rousing success. A full house enjoyed a festive atmosphere under perfectly behaved blue skies thanks to the weather gods and a hard-working committee composed of Jane Ford-Hutchinson, our fearless leader and chair, Mary Fowles, Sally Henriques, David Hewitt, Carol Hurst, Diana Resek, Candace Wallace, and Laura Womack, with additional behind-the-scenes help from Patrick Fowles and Terri Epstein. Jane’s devoted family also pitched in with son-in-law Dave Dembeck as the evening’s emcee, and granddaughters Kara and Ada joining the Fowles’ grandsons Jack and Wyatt in the management of the yard games.

When Phillips’ Mill invites people to become a part of the Mill family, they mean it!

Special thanks to the Back Porch Jugband for their spirited musical accompaniment for the evening, Dan Sierchio for photographing the event, and Pierre’s Chocolates of New Hope for donating their delectable chocolates for our dessert course.

Finally, the entire Mill family — committee, board, and membership — is grateful to those who stepped up to donate additional financial contributions to this all-important Preservation Fund event. A complete list of contributors will be added to the website soon.

Tears, Laughter and the Joy of Live Theater

There were tears, there were gasps of horror, there was laughter plus every emotion in between at this year’s Premiere Showcase, “The Half of It,” a play by Domenick Scudera directed by Griffin Horn. Warren Smith played a fabulous Bert Savoy and was supported by a troupe of five talented actors playing multiple roles, including Griffin Horn in the role of Jay Brennan. The period costumes, props and scenery were executed by the expert hand of Lisa Hokans. Member Scott Minnucci ran tech on our new sound and lighting systems. The play ran for four performances, each attended by a full audience of supporters of new play development.

Our Historic Mill

Our Beloved Mill Needs TLC!
(and we all need A/C in this heat!)

Caring for an 18th-century building never ends and costs money. We recently needed to replace the air conditioning and repair the septic system. We thank our supporters with deep gratitude. Please consider donating to our Preservation Fund to help us maintain our historic building.
